The Graduate Visa route allows international students who have successfully completed a UK degree at a recognised Higher Education Provider to remain in the UK to work or look for work after their studies. This route is commonly referred to as the Post-Study Work Visa.

Eligibility requirements

To qualify for a Graduate visa, you must demonstrate that:

  • – You have successfully completed a UK bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree, or other eligible qualification, from a Home Office-approved university.

  • – You have a valid Student visa at the time of application.
  • – You apply from inside the UK while your Student visa is still valid, as you cannot apply from outside the UK.

  • – You are 18 years or over at the time of application.

  • – You pass suitability checks e.g., having no criminal convictions or immigration violations.

  •

Your university must formally confirm that you have met the course requirements and have completed all academic obligations before you can submit your application.

Duration of stay

The length of stay granted under the Graduate Visa route depends on the qualification you have completed:

  •
  • – Bachelor’s or master’s degree: up to 2 years
  • – PhD or other doctoral qualification: up to 3 years

This visa cannot be extended, but you may be able to switch to another visa category—such as the Skilled Worker, Innovator Founder, or Global Talent route—if you meet the relevant eligibility requirements.

The Graduate Visa does not lead to Settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain). To qualify for permanent residency, you would need to switch into a settlement-eligible visa category once you meet the requirements.

work rights

While holding a Graduate Visa, you are permitted to work in any role, either full-time or part-time, at any skill level. You may also choose to be self-employed, start your own business, or take part in voluntary work. Unlike the Skilled Worker route, there are no restrictions on the job type or salary.

Do I need to prove English ability?

No. You do not need to take another English test if you already met the English language requirement for your Student Visa.

Do I need a job offer before applying?

No. Unlike the Skilled Worker Visa, the Graduate Visa does not require a job offer.

Can I start my own business?

Yes. Graduate Visa holders can start and run a business in the UK, offering flexibility to explore entrepreneurship after study.

What happens if my Graduate Visa expires?

You must either:

  • – Switch to another visa route, or

  • – Leave the UK, or

  • – Continue your employment or business under a new visa.

  •

Can I study further while on a Graduate Visa?

Yes. You may take additional courses while on this visa. However, study cannot be the main purpose of your stay—your primary focus should be work or career development.

Can I volunteer or do unpaid work?

Yes. You are permitted to volunteer or undertake unpaid work alongside paid employment.

Is there a minimum salary requirement?

No. There is no minimum salary or job level requirement for Graduate Visa holders, unlike the Skilled Worker Visa.

Can I change employers while on a Graduate Visa?

Yes. You can work for any employer in the UK, switch jobs, or establish your own business without restrictions.

Do I need health insurance?

You must pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) when applying for your Graduate Visa, which provides full access to the NHS.

Can I apply from outside the UK?

No. The Graduate Visa is only available to applicants who are in the UK on a valid Student Visa at the time of application.

How soon after graduation can I apply?

You can apply once your university has officially confirmed that you have successfully completed your course, and while your Student Visa remains valid.

Can I do casual or gig work?

Yes. You may undertake casual, gig, or freelance work—as long as it complies with UK law and visa conditions.
