The High Potential Individual (HPI) Visa is a UK immigration route for recent graduates from the world’s top universities. It is an unsponsored visa, meaning you do not need a job offer or employer sponsorship to apply. This route is designed to attract high-achieving individuals to live, work, seek employment, or start a business in the UK.

Eligibility requirements

To qualify for the High Potential Individual visa, you must meet the following criteria:

– You hold a degree from an eligible university listed on the Global Universities List.

– You have been awarded your qualification within the last 5 years.

– You have a qualification equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree or higher.

– You meet the English language requirement at B2 CEFR.

– You are at least 18 years old at the time of application.

– You have sufficient funds to support yourself (and any dependants) without relying on public funds.

Duration of stay

The length of stay granted under the High Potential Individual visa depends on the qualification you hold. You can stay in the UK for up to 2 years if you have a bachelor’s or master’s degree, or up to 3 years if you hold a PhD or other doctoral qualification. This visa cannot be extended; however, you may be able to switch to another visa route, such as the Skilled Worker, Innovator Founder, or Global Talent Visa if you meet the eligibility requirements. The HPI Visa does not lead directly to settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain). To obtain settlement in the UK, you would need to switch into a visa category that offers a route to ILR once you qualify.

Work rights

The High Potential Individual visa offers full flexibility in how you can work in the UK. You may take up employment at any skill level, be self‑employed, or start your own business. You are also free to do freelance or contract work for multiple clients. Unlike sponsored visas, the HPI Visa is unsponsored, so you are not tied to a specific employer or role.

Do I need a job offer before applying?

No. The HPI Visa does not require a job offer or sponsorship. You have complete freedom to look for work, work for any employer, or even start your own business in the UK once your visa is granted.

Does the HPI visa allow self-employment?

Yes. You can be self‑employed, freelance, or start your own business without needing sponsorship or employer approval.

Do I need a sponsor licence to employ someone on an HPI visa?

No. The HPI Visa is unsponsored, so employers do not need a sponsor licence to hire someone who holds this visa.

Can I bring my family members with me?

Yes. You can bring your partner and dependent children under 18 with you to the UK, provided you meet the financial requirements to support them without relying on public funds. Your dependants can live, study, and— in most cases—work in the UK for the duration of your visa.

What documents do I need for the application?

You’ll need proof of your qualification and the awarding institution, English language evidence, and financial documentation showing you meet the maintenance requirement. You may also need to submit your passport, biometric details, and any dependant applications.

Can I switch to another visa from inside the UK?

Yes. You may switch to another immigration route (such as the Skilled Worker or Global Talent Visa) before your HPI Visa expires, as long as you meet the eligibility requirements for the new category. You cannot, however, extend the HPI Visa itself.

Can I study while in the UK on this visa?

Yes. You may undertake additional courses or professional training while holding the HPI Visa. However, your main purpose of stay should not be full‑time study, and you must maintain compliance with your visa conditions.

Can I apply from outside the UK?

Yes. All HPI Visa applications must be made from outside the UK, unless you currently hold an eligible visa that allows switching from within the UK. The endorsement and application process is entirely online.

Can I use my online degree to apply?

Yes, if your qualification was awarded by an eligible university and meets UK NARIC (Ecctis) standards for equivalency.
