The Graduate Visa allows international students who have successfully completed a UK degree at a recognised Higher Education Provider to stay and work, or look for work, in the UK after their studies. It is commonly known as the Post-Study Work Visa.
Duration of Stay
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree: Up to 2 years
PhD or other doctoral qualification: Up to 3 years
This visa is not extendable, but you can switch to another visa route, such as Skilled Worker,
Innovator Founder, or Global Talent, if eligible.
Work Rights
You can work in any job, full-time or part-time
You may be self-employed or start your own business
You can undertake voluntary work
There are no restrictions on skill level, unlike Skilled Worker visas

No additional English test is required if you already meet the Student Visa English requirement.

No. Unlike Skilled Worker Visas, the Graduate Visa does not require a job offer.

Is there a minimum salary requirement?
No. There is no minimum salary or job requirement for Graduate Visa holders, unlike Skilled Worker Visas.
Can I change employers while on a Graduate Visa?
Yes. You can work for any employer in the UK, switch jobs, or start your own business without restrictions.
Do I need health insurance?
You must pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) when applying for your Graduate Visa, giving full access to the NHS.
Can I apply from outside the UK?
No. The Graduate Visa is only available for applicants inside the UK on a valid Student Visa at the time of application.
How soon after graduation can I apply?
You can apply once your university has officially confirmed you have successfully completed your course and whilst your Student Visa is still valid
Can I do casual or gig work?
Yes. You may do casual or gig work, freelancing, or part-time work as long as it does not breach UK law or visa rules.
What happens if my university delays issuing my final results?
You cannot apply for the Graduate Visa until your degree is officially awarded or confirmed. We can advise on timing and preparation so you can apply as soon as eligible.
Can I apply for ILR directly from a Graduate Visa?
No. The Graduate Visa does not directly lead to settlement. You must switch to a settlement-eligible visa, such as Skilled Worker or Global Talent, before applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).
