The UK Student Visa (formerly the Tier 4 Visa) is designed for international students who wish to come to the UK to study at a licensed education provider. This visa covers a wide range of courses, from short-term English-language programmes to full degree courses.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for a Student Visa:

– You must hold a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a UK institution that holds a valid student sponsor licence.

– You must show you have enough funds to pay for your course fees and living costs for up to 9 months. (£1,529/month in London and £1,171/month outside London)

– You must genuinely intend to study the course you are coming to the UK for, and you must plan to leave at the end of your visa.

– You may need to prove your English ability through an approved test, depending on your course and nationality.

– Proof of accommodation or a relevant financial amount may be required, depending on your situation.

Who can apply for a UK Student Visa?

Any international student with an offer from a licensed UK education provider and a valid Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) can apply.

 

Do short-term English-language students face extra scrutiny?

Yes. They must pass a “genuine student” assessment to demonstrate they intend to study and will leave the UK after the course.

 

Do I need to take the Life in the UK Test?

No. This is not required for Student Visa holders.

 

How do eVisas work?

All Student Visa holders now receive a digital visa (eVisa) held in their UKVI account. 

 

How do I prove my financial evidence?

Bank statements, savings, scholarships, or financial sponsorship letters can be used. Funds must be held for at least 28 consecutive days before applying.

 

Are there age limits for the Student Visa?

There is no strict age limit, but younger students may need parental consent if under 18.

 

How long can I stay in the UK on a Student Visa?

You can stay for the duration of your course plus a short period after completion: Degree courses: 4 months after Short-term courses: up to 2 months
